Please read carefully before download
This is a rather experimental plugin. It may not work correctly if you don't follow a special installation guide. However, the worst what can happen is that your Apo doesn't start. If that is the case - remove the plugin again and try to reinstall it correctly.
dc_image takes a relatively high amount of system memory (RAM) and may affect the maximum number of plugins you can load into Apophysis. Also - memory leaks are easy to create when it comes to bitmaps and I am a human, no robot. Please do not freak out if your Apo hangs and need to be shut down. Thanks!

Here is how you install it:
  1. Create a folder named "Images" in your Apophysis directory
  2. Put Bitmap files (.bmp) into that directory named after the following schema:
    dc_image_0.bmp, dc_image_1.bmp, ...
The bitmap files must be in 24 bit format. This is the default format. It is pre-selected in Photoshop when saving and Windows Paint always saves 24 bit bitmaps.

  3. Install the plugin into your plugins folder.

You don't need a special Apophysis version! All it needs is a DC-enabled Apo (which is 7x14 at the time of release)

Once correctly installed, you can use dc_image_index to select an image from the "Images" folder (dc_image_<index>.bmp) - if the index is negative or the file was not found, it acts as linear3D.
Use dc_image_mode to select the coloring mode:
  • 0 - colors by brightness (first gradient color for darkest, last gradient color for brightest pixels)

  • 1 - colors by binary value (b<<16 | g << 8 | r) - for advanced users

You may also want to use dc_image_mincmap and dc_image_maxcmap to restrict the range of the gradient where dc_image can choose colors from.

I won't give support for this. If you have problems, solve them yourselves for now until I declare the plugin "final"

Have fun!

This plugin has been featured in my Musically Inspired T-Shirt Challenge Entry.

This was fun for me since I'd yet to be successful with this particular plugin and it's been around for almost two years. Thanks so much for creating it, `Xyrus02!!!

I've started to fool around with the DC plugins a bit, and I'm not that great in terms of using them yet, but I'm really liking what I'm seeing. I think I might use this for some very interesting fanart! Took a while to figure out how to get images to work with it, but once I did, its been pretty easy to use.

Does the .bmp image have to be transparent?

.bmps don't support transparency (except 32 bit but those cannot be loaded)
So - no, they dont have to ;) Best is a greyscale, square bitmap without transparency.

Ah thanks! I'll try out the greyscale instead of the black now.

yes reminds me of Joel's Image Apo (which I still use sometimes because I'm one of the few who actually got it to work)

one "bug" I've found is that you can't use the smooth palette function in the gradient editor to load a gradient from a picture, you'll lose the image and the only way to reset it (as far as know) is to restart Apo7x, pretty cool though as it opens up a lot of new possibilities

Oh indeed, smooth palettes can cause problems. Property to fix some day - Apo source is big and I sometimes forget to "re-adjust" some features :D (human, errors 'n' stuff :lmao:)
Joels image Apo is amazing and I don't understand why it is not upgraded. Let that plugin and its (probably build in) successors be the heritage of this awesome version.

I always lamented that the 2.04-JF image import never got incorporated into later versions, and this appears to do just that :boogie: Now, let's see if I can remember... :D

Everyone feels reminded to the image Apo :D This thing works kinda different but produces equal result ;) And except of DC-enabled Apo, you don't need a specific version.

Very nice idea! May I guess, it is implemented as returning a random pixel from the image?
That is, the output is (x,y,c) where x,y is in range -1, 1 and c is the color of the pixel corresponding to the coordinate?

No, it acts as linear and maps the input point from [-1;1]^2 to [0;image_size]^2 to get the color.
The color is converted to weighted grayscale and mapped from [0;255] to [0;1] in mode 0 to determine TC, while in mode 1, the color is read as a 24 bit integer and mapped from [0;16777216] to [0;1] to determine TC.

Images in Apo are always difficult but worth experimenting indeed :) Don't be disappointed if it is hard to operate, every "hack" is :D
