Mater Lagrimarium by Xyrus-02 Mater Lagrimarium by Xyrus-02
An Apophysis composition based on spherical and eyefish.

Oh by the way: the dust-effect on this one and Neptunian Nightsky is DC_Image, not the upcoming dust-plugin. Just FYI!

This fractal's main strength, by far, is its sense of "atmosphere." It almost looks like the "blobs" are strange translucent sea-creatures swimming toward the viewer through murky water. This idea of atmosphere is relatively rare in such a technically-oriented artform, and thus, quite refreshing.

The "thinness" of the flame and relative lack of fine detail actually contribute to the effect, which is especially impressive because imho those are two qualities that usually make fractals worse, not better. I also think the slight grain adds a lot to the atmosphere, but I'm an admitted fan of grain in general and tend to think it is underused. On top of that, the DC Image obviously creates some of the murkiness. I think this might even be the best use of DC Image in your gallery. Last but not least, the colors are quite subtle but there's just enough contrast for the forms to still pop.

I have two main criticisms of the image: The bright circular points within each are extremely distracting. I'm not sure where they're coming from but maybe they could be removed with a clever combination of opacity and xaos?

Second of all, the image is just ever so slightly aliased, I think. This is especially visible along the thin bright lines (of course). IMHO this is an image that calls for really, really smooth lines, so the aliasing is also distracting.

The usage of advanced texture and lighting in fractal art has really inspired me to step my game up. Keep it up man.

Very atmospheric, like coming upon some phosphorescent marine colony.
