Boy, this took a while to render. What I did here is applying a multiscale TMC-pattern to a fractal flame from within Apophysis. I was using the same approach I used to create godrays in flames - however, I'm slightly unsatisfied about it's blending as I was targeting to blend the pattern into the fractal structure. Gnarls don't seem to like that, though.

It's hard for me to even describe the image, but here goes: there's your central octagon surrounded by 2 or 3 sets of what look almost like gears, all with 8 teeth. Beyond that things start to open up and it looks like a spiral, even though it may very well not be. So far, so good--the image is almost hypnotic. But superimposed on this is what looks like broken glass. It's very subtle, visible only at the edges and where the areas beneath it are slightly darkened, but I'm not at all sure it adds anything, and I find it distracting. The piece has plenty to look at without the "broken glass," and there are a couple of areas where you could have added even more. The central octagon looks like it should be a medallion of some sort, but at the level of detail that the site and my monitor allow there isn't any real design. You can (especially if you're a genius like Rembrandt or H. Shepherd Paine) evoke elaborate carvings and tapestries with a few well-placed "squiggles" of paint. The bad news is that if you look at your image long enough and closely enough, the lack of an actual design in the central medallion becomes apparent. The good news is that the design is so interesting and so arresting that I looked long enough to see. Your little dark ovals look like maybe they ought to be cabochons. As is, I can't tell what they're supposed to be.
Overall I thought this was captivating, otherwise I wouldn't have written hundreds of words about it. I would consider it a serious kick if you appreciated my suggestions enough to follow them and to send me a copy of the file. I have a feeling that the full-size file is too big for the site, and that it would make a great print.

What the heck is TMC? It looks exactly like a layer and emboss technique in PhotoShop or Painter. Or maybe like layers in UF. Can't say I ever liked conflicting overlaying texture patterns too much in a fractal. That is why I find mandelbulbs interesting, that the textures actualy conform to the shapes their on.

TMC = Turing McCabe [pattern]
It's a noise algorithm which I used to create an experimental plugin, kind of like with what I did with fractional brownian motion (FBM)
It had the same problems so it remained experimental and I don't think I even backed up the code.

Thank you. No, it's sort of it's own thing. I needed to change the Apo code a bit to make it work.
